Book Review: Daniel Vosovic’s “Fashion Inside Out”

Daniel Vosovic was the first sure thing in “Project Runway” history.

But something happened on the way to the $100,000 prize. His military and Asian inspired collection (not to mention those wooden purses) didn’t quite connect with the judges and Daniel finished second.

But the fan favorite has still managed to stay in the fashion spotlight by designing uniforms for hotel chain NYLO and doing work on the “Lipstick Jungle” website for NBC. And now he’s written a book—“Fashion Inside Out: Daniel V’s Guide to How Style Happens From Inspiration to Runway and Beyond.”

If you’re looking for a “Runway” tell-all, you’ll be disappointed (I’m hoping someone is working on one of those.). But if you’re looking for an inside look at how fashion comes together, then this book is for you.

It should be no surprise—since we’re talking about Daniel V—that the book is gorgeous. From the beautifully designed felt cover to pages of stunning photography by Michael Turek.

Unfortunately the substance doesn’t always live up to the looks. Daniel tries so hard to stuff so much information in the book that at times his central idea gets lost. But because you learn so much, it’s easy to forgive Daniel’s scattered thoughts.

Daniel shows you how to sketch, how to pick out fabric, all the tricks of the trade for starting your creation, how to style a model in your design and much, MUCH more…

Daniel is at his best, though, when he’s interviewing icons from every step of the process including designers, stylists, photographers, executives and educators. Heidi Klum and Nina Garcia are both interviewed, as is Tim Gunn, who also writes the foreword for the book.

If you’re like me and you learned everything you know about the business of fashion from “Project Runway,” this book will fill in a lot of blanks.

And I also hope it will raise Daniel’s profile. Just because he didn’t win “Runway” doesn’t mean he’s still not deserving of a fantastic career…

“Fashion Inside Out” is available at bookstores now…
