Will a Writers' Strike Destroy the Season?
Don’t get too used to your favorite shows when they return later this month since they many not be around too long…
The networks are bracing for a strike by the Writers’ Guild of America. That would leave shows without any writers, which would mean no scripted shows.
So what are the networks planning in case of the worst? Most shows will have stockpiled enough episodes to last for a while, but if the strike persists, the networks will have to resort to other measures. That means more reality shows and some of the networks are already negotiating to buy British and Canadian shows.
The networks could also take programming from their sister cable networks. For example, NBC could show “Burn Notice” (from USA), ABC could show “Hannah Montana” (from Disney), and FOX could show “Damages” (from FX). Warner Bros. is reportedly already shopping around “The Closer,” with the most likely destination being CBS.
But unfortunately, reruns would be unavoidable.
The WGA contract expires October 31st.
