Idol Update Part 2: The CMAs

There was so much to say in this week’s Idol Update that I didn’t include anything about the CMAs.

Carrie Underwood is nominated for four awards: Single of the Year for “Jesus Take the Wheel,” Female Vocalist of the Year, Music Video of the Year for “Jesus Take the Wheel,” and the Horizon Award (the CMA equivalent of Best New Artist). “Jesus Take the Wheel” is also nominated for Song of the Year, which goes to the songwriter.

More than one magazine has already predicted that Carrie will take home Female Vocalist of the Year, even though she’s facing stiff competition from Sara Evans, Faith Hill, Martina McBride and Gretchen Wilson. The competition is even tougher for the Horizon Award with Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Sugarland and Josh Turner. However, it will be hard for the CMAs to ignore everything Carrie has accomplished this year, so I’ve got to believe she’ll win something.

I just hope it’s not Music Video of the Year. I have to admit I was pretty shocked to see “Jesus” among the nominations, considering what a waste of an opportunity that video was. Instead of just telling the story of the song, they chose to intersperse a bunch of sappy images that just didn’t tell the story. And since it was Carrie’s first single, her stiffness was still in full effect. I’m really not sure how “Jesus” could be nominated instead of a clever clip like “Like We Never Loved at All.”

Carrie is also scheduled to perform at the CMAs. I’m guessing she’ll sing “Jesus,” but I haven’t heard.

The CMAs, hosted by Brooks and Dunn, will air Monday, November 6th at 8 p.m. on ABC.
