“Top Design”: Keeps Gettin’ Better…
Christina Aguilera has a new song called “Keeps Gettin’ Better.”
“Top Design” may want to seriously consider adopting it as its new theme song because it perfectly describes the show’s second season.
Thanks to great contestants, interesting challenges and great guest judges and clients, “Design” has become must-see-TV and is starting to outshine its more heralded counterpart, “Project Runway”…
Because what “Runway” seems to have forgotten this year, “Design” has kept front and center—the contestants. If you don’t have good contestants, no one cares and “Design” has good ones. One of them works for Martha Stewart. One of them worked on the “Sex and the City” movie. And of course, there’s my favorite, Andrea, aka Mrs. Ricky Schroder. But more important than their credentials, they’re also good characters…
And the judges seem to actually be watching the same show as we are. Jonathan, Margaret, and Kelly complement each other perfectly. Todd Oldham is a great mentor and even teaches the designers a thing or two along the way. And as I’ve said before, India Hicks is a fierce host…
Last week the contestants had to pair up and do a window display for a former “Runway” designer. There was Santino, an almost unrecognizable Jeffrey, Sweet P, Andre, and Daniel Franco (“Daniel Franco, where did you go, o-oh.”). Of course, Santino and Jeffrey had specific demands, Sweet P was sweet, Andre was overly dramatic about a pretty plain looking dress, and Daniel had a poem to describe his inspiration.
Andre’s team was doomed for the bottom when Andre had a freakout about wicker and Jeffrey’s team fell apart when team captain Kerry caved to his teammate’s plea to be able to make his own statement, which totally disagreed with Jeffrey’s vision. Meanwhile, Sweet P’s team had no trouble and thanks to his poem, Daniel Franco’s team (which included Andrea) cruised as well.
The biggest surprise of the night was not that Kerry went home, but that Daniel Franco can actually design clothes. His dress was gorgeous!
This week, the designers are faced with an almost impossible task—pleasing Jeff Lewis, who will be the guest judge.
I’m “Flipping Out” already…
