"Privileged" Review: Passable, But...
With all the hype surrounding “Gossip Girl” and “90210,” there hasn’t been that much attention paid to the other new rich kid show on The CW—“Privileged.”
But there’s not really anything attention grabbing about it…
If you missed it, “Privileged” tells the story of Megan (Joanna Garcia). Within the first five minutes Megan’s apartment burns down and she’s fired from her job as a writer at a tabloid. But her editor decides to help her by recommending her for a job as a live-in tutor in ritzy Palm Beach.
Laurel (Anne Archer) hires Megan to tutor her grandchildren: the tough-as-nails Sage (Ashley Newbrough) and her sweet follower Rose (Lucy Kate Hale). If Megan can get them into Duke, Laurel will pay off Megan’s student loans.
Megan is totally blown away by Laurel’s lifestyle, but it turns out she’s not a stranger to Palm Beach. We learn that her father and sister live there, but she doesn’t want them to know she’s back.
After making a little headway with the twins, Megan runs afoul of Sage and gets fired. But after Megan stands up to Sage, Laurel rehires her. However, Sage gets the last laugh when she invites Megan’s sister to a big social event and she and Megan get into it in front of the guy who’s been hitting on Megan.
Joanna Garcia (“Reba”) is adorable and the real reason to watch the show. Hale’s Rose is also cute, but Newbrough’s Sage is annoying.
And quite honestly, don’t we have enough shows about young, beautiful rich people on the air already?
“Privileged” tries way too hard to set itself apart by being witty with references to Spider-Man and phrases like “spoiler alert,” but it fails miserably.
The bottom line is that “Privileged” is passable, but if The CW plans to survive, it’s going to need to get a little more variety…
“Privileged” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW…
