DVD Review: "Picture This!"
So remember how I said in my review of “Camp Rock” that I missed something better to watch, the new Ashley Tisdale movie?
Yeah, I think I actually made the better choice that night after all…
From the promos, “Picture This!” looks like your standard outsider snares the popular guy love story. And if you watch the making of featurette on the DVD, that’s what the cast thinks it is. But it’s actually nowhere close.
In fact, I have no idea what it’s supposed to be…
Ashley Tisdale is the outsider, Mandy. Robbie Arnell plays the popular guy, Drew. And of course, Drew has a mean girl girlfriend, Lisa, played by Cindy Busby. Within the first 20 minutes, after getting a new cell phone and contacts, Mandy connects with Drew.
So what’s the other hour and 20 minutes about?
Basically we watch Mandy and her friends outsmart Mandy’s dad while trying to get Mandy to Drew’s party. And not only does Mandy have to fool her dad, she also has to thwart Lisa’s schemes.
Some of the scenarios are actually quite cute and Tisdale is always appealing. Plus, Kevin Pollack is perfect as the overprotective dad. But when it comes time to actually go somewhere with the story, the movie doesn’t quite know what to do.
And quite frankly, after a while, you start to feel like you’re watching a giant cell phone commercial…
To add more conflict to the story, we’re introduced to the possibility that Drew isn’t as great as Mandy thinks he is. But that story never gets fully explored. And the ending—though satisfying—is totally tacked on without any real explanation.
Tisdale also served as an executive producer on this one. I hope for her next project she picks a vehicle that actually knows where it’s going.
“Picture This!” is now available on DVD. You can also see it Tuesday, August 5th at 9 p.m. on ABC Family…
