DVD Review: "Conan O'Brien Can't Stop"

I think you guys know that I was hooked on every single move of NBC’s late night fiasco. And even though I considered myself a member of Team Leno, I still felt for Conan O’Brien and truly admired his class in handling the situation.

But now, thanks to an outstanding documentary, we have the chance to see Conan’s anger, confusion and depression in full effect. And it’s heartbreaking and fascinating all at the same time…

“Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop” follows Conan on his “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on TV Tour” from the show’s conception to the final city. And what unfolds is a compelling look inside the mind of a man who lost his dream job under the most auspicious of circumstances.

Conan is not afraid to show his anger and we see it several times during the 88+ minutes. But what is most interesting is that Conan O’Brien truly can’t stop. He complains about all the meet-and-greets, but he does them anyway. He worries that he might lose his voice, but he still insists on entertaining his assistant with jokes and songs. He is angry when he finds out he has to introduce all of the acts at Bonnaroo instead of just one, but he does it with everything he has. It’s almost like laughter is his drug and without it, he almost can’t survive…

One thing I would have liked to have seen more of in the documentary is the discussion that led up to Conan’s decision to go to TBS. I realize the documentary is about the tour, but since we see Conan emphatically say he’s not going to TBS, it would have been nice to see why he changed his mind.

If you’re a member of Team Coco, this is an absolute must-see. But even if you consider yourself a member of Team Leno—as I once did—you should watch this to see how a very funny, yet angry man made lemonade out of some pretty rotten lemons…
