Hi, just watched the first show and think it's great. he's pretty tough but has some great points. loved how he put all the golden brown food on the table. we'll probably watch a few more to see how it turns out. hope everyone can learn a few things, not only in WV, but the nation as a whole. also, by reading some of the stories on the paper site, I learned that his kitchen is now used for teaching by a non-profit = a wonderful idea!
ReplyDeleteWatched the show with interest as I'm from WV and am always dismayed with the negative publicity we receive (albeit, in this case, accurate). Also, I work as an administrator in the NC school system and am appalled by what 'passes' as healthy food choices. I've often said I feel like my arteries are clogging just by walking into most school cafeterias. That's not a slam on the cooks as they are wonderful people, just a statement of how bad it really is. America has become over processed in many areas and the food we give our kids should be outlawed. I hope Jamie's strategies are embraced but know it will not be easy. Parents in WV and every state need a wake up call. Keep the faith and give it to them Jamie!

ReplyDeleteAs a West Virginia who now lives in Northern VA suburbs, I can assure you that these issues are everywhere. My son is 12 and the school lumnches at his school are awful and completely unhealthy. The USDA guidelines are a joke and need to be changed. Jamie is doing a good thing yet the people in Huntington seem to be oblivious and even defensive. The women in the lunch room are NOT thinking about what is best for the children. We parents need to unite and demand changes to the school menus all over the country. Poor nutrition is a pandemic at this point.
ReplyDeleteWhat happen to wanting what is best for the children vs you being right. The principal & the cafeteria workers along with the local radio talk show personality were horrible. Hey Jamie didn't get them where they are...so embrace the help and quit acting like someone is going to take your job. If anything it's job security, you will be cooking vs heating up food.
ReplyDeleteI realized too how much I am using processed foods & will be scaling back on it. I am even looking into planting a garden for the first time in my life too.
So see you can teach old dogs new tricks and hopefully Huntington will be the healthiest city in the future and teach us all a thing or two.
